What is a Registrar?

A Registrar is an accredited company that will allow you to register and pay for a domain name. A Registrar may be licensed to sell one or more TLDs. A Registrar can license 'resellers' - usually web hosting or web design firms - to sell domain names on their behalf.

Registrar for .ie

  • There is only one Registrar for .ie domain names and that is domainregistry.ie
  • Domainregistry sell the .ie domain name for €65 + 21.5%VAT = €79pa
  • domainregistry.ie also licenses 'resellers' who can sell an .ie domain name to you for any price they choose. Some .ie resellers are cheaper, some are more expensive.

Registrars for .com, .net, .info, .biz, .org

There are hundreds of Registrars in this category, however GoDaddy.com is by far the most cost-effective registrar for any of these choices. All are available at under US$10pa.

Registrars for .eu

Again, they are too numerous to mention, but GoDaddy.com is by far the cheapest registrar at US$14.99pa at time of writing. (The last time I checked godaddy, it was around US$12, so prices are up a bit.)

Registrars for .co.uk

Again there are many registrars out there but the award goes to GoDaddy.com, who at time of writing this article are selling .co.uk domain names for US$9.99pa - an unbeatable price.

What about Resellers? Are they cheaper than Registrars? Should you register your domain name with a Registrar or a Reseller?
